Adult Skipper’s and
US Sailing Keelboat Certification Class
Two new classes have been combined into one class for the 2007 season. One class is a skipper’s certification class. This class is the next step up from intermediate sailing. It will cover the basics of engineoutboard and inboardchecking the oil, starting, shifting and stopping; using an emergency tiller, VHF radios and the protocols to be followed in using them; use of fire extinguishes in dealing with onboard fires, strategies for avoiding running aground and strategies free yourself if you do run aground; review of docking procedures, placement of fenders and securing the boat at the dock, use of lights after dark and reading weather signs.
The other class is US Sailing’s Keelboat Certification. River Cities Community Sailing Program is offering this class through a cooperative effort with the Ocean Sailing Academy based in Charleston, South Carolina. This class prepares student to pass US Sailing’s written and practical test for Keelboat Certification. The class is a review and a honing of the skills learned initially in beginning and intermediate sailing. Through the review and honing students skills will be brought to the level required of Ocean Sailing Academy Keelboat Certification candidates.
Those who pass the class and US Sailing’s written and practical tests go the spoils. They will be deemed an RCCSP certified skipper. If the new RCCSP certified skipper is a member of RCCSP’s sailing time-share, he/she will have the right to take out any of the boats in the time-share program, as long as another time-share member goes out with him/her.
In passing the class, students will also earn their US Sailing Keelboat Certification. As a reward, US Sailing will provide newly certified sailors with a year’s membership in US Sailing and a US Sailing Logbook. US Sailing Keelboat Certification also makes the student eligible to sign up for basic cruising courses all US Sailing affiliated sailing school.
The RCCSP Skipper and US Sailing Keelboat Certification Class is scheduled for one weekend a month beginning June and running through October. A 15 hours course, it will meet both Saturday and Sunday.
