Commodore’s Comments:

Memorial Day Weekend Events:

Once again, the Ohio River is being the Ohio River. As of today, (Wednesday) the lower level of the club is under 1-2’ of river water, and due to the elevated river levels and recent weather, the committee boat still sits on the trailer and the hoists are still in storage. Therefore, we will cancel the “Fun Racing” and “Race Around 12 Mile Island” scheduled for Saturday and Monday respectively this weekend. We will also postpone our first “social” event of the season, the Saturday Evening Picnic to Saturday, May 31st at 6:00 pm. If the weather and river levels cooperate this weekend we may have a small work session to get the hoists up, committee boat in the water and other Commissioning left-over tasks completed. With a little luck, we will begin Fleet Racing next weekend.

Saturday Evening Picnic:

As I mentioned, we will kick off the sailing season with a Saturday Evening Family Picnic at the club on Saturday, May 31st at 6:00. The club will provide hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages (beer, wine and soft drinks) and we will ask everyone attending to bring their favorite picnic food to share. So that we plan appropriately, please send an email to keith.kenitzer@gmail.com if you plan to attend with the number of folks attending. That way we will have enough burgers, dogs and drinks for everyone.

Race Committee List:

We are actively working on our Race Committee list for the 2014 Sailing Season. We ask all members to serve one weekend a year on Race Committee. Typically we assign a Crew Captain that has been around the club for a while and has some Race Committee experience along with 1 or 2 other Race Committee members. We also try to schedule racing crews to the same weekend so that we disrupt boats and crews that sail together as little as possible. If you have a preferred weekend for RC duty or if you have weekends that you are not going to be available due to family, work or vacation plans, please send an email to keith.kenitzer@gmail.com by May 25th with your preferences. We will do all that we can to accommodate your requests. We plan to have the list ready to go and published by Tuesday, May 27th. Just as a reminder, Race Committees members should plan on being at the club an hour before the start of scheduled race activities. The typical Fleet Racing weekend will include Flying Scots on Saturday morning, 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, Thistles on Saturday afternoon, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Lasers on Sunday morning, 11:00 am to 1:30 pm and Highlanders on Sunday afternoon, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Finally, Fleet Captains, if your fleet will not be sailing for any reason, please contact the Race Committee Crew Captain to let him or her know that your fleet is taking a weekend off.

Commissioning

We had great turn out for our two Commissioning Saturdays. As soon as the river cooperates, we still need to hang the up stream hoist, put in the floating docks, launch the committee boats, and hose off the lower dock area. Once we can take boats below we can get the tall grass cut in the back lot.

One of the projects that was accomplished this past Saturday was the installation of a cover over the lower deck. Thanks to all who stayed late to finish this project and a special thanks to all the supervision that was given. What would the Sailing Club be with out all those who have supervising skills.

Thanks to Keli, Stuart Ulferts and others for fixing lunch this past Saturday.

Pictures

It is almost time to publish the Louisville Sailing Club annual directory. Please take a head shot of yourself send it to happyhull@aol.com (You will know it was received if you get the message “This email address does not respond to your email”) It has been suggested that we use Herman Munster or Phyllis Diller to be placed in all the blank picture holders. We need these pictures immediately.
