The Newsletter of the Louisville Boatbuilding Society - No. 1

A couple of Thursdays ago a small group of us met to discuss boatbuilding. In particular, we talked of building small craft in wood for rowing, paddling, sailing and motoring. Furthermore, the building of some of these boats was to be a group activity. At the end of our two hour meeting we decided to start on our first boat as soon as possible. So - when do we start?

Before we get started there are a few things I'd like to address first.

What we didn't do at that first meeting might be the most important thing that happened. We didn't make up a bunch of rules, definitions, or goals that describe (limit?) our reason and purpose for getting together in the first place. At the moment, I think it's best this way. If we get started on a boat now it will help define ourselves later.

Our first project will be a learning experience for all, myself included. Some of us will pick up some of our first woodworking tools and skills while others will learn to share the skills we have, teaching a little as we go along. The skills needed to build this first boat are basic as well as the tools and materials needed to complete the job. No one need be intimidated.

Some folks might not want to build as a group but will want to join in any discussions about boats and such. Perhaps they have a project of their own in their garage and look to our group as a resource for info, opinion, and encouragement. By the way, we are assembling a library of sorts-boatbuilding books and magazines donated to us for this purpose. Check it out.

At the moment, meetings will be here at my house as will the first building sessions. I suggest, and offer, that we build here on Saturdays starting at noon. October 7 will be the first session and will run consecutive Saturdays until we're done. If you miss a Saturday try to at least stop by before the next Saturday to have me explain what happened previously. You can also call 502-456-0917 or e-mail me.

As you can see I have tried to organize a system by which all who are interested can get the information they need concerning times, dates, resources etc. Maybe this "newsletter" is a bit much but it's an attempt to keep everyone on the same page. Let's work on this together to see if it can be developed further. Please let me know what you're thinking.

Yours truly,
Mitch Larsen
